Part of the latest lets-make-a-movie-out-of-everything trend, The Emoji Movie is without doubt one of the most surprising and improbable animated films coming out this year. And if you’re still doubting Sony Pictures’ ability to create a whole universe out of your famous messaging app’s icons, here’s a chance to get a better idea of the result with a first trailer published online today.
Set in the digital world of a smartphone, The Emoji Movie will center on Gene, an emoji with more than one facial expression whose legacy is to become a “meh” icon. Struggling to fit in, he will begin a journey (beyond the firewall) to self-discovery.
Comedian T.J. Miller will land his voice to the main character, joined by a star-studded cast including Anna Faris, James Corden, Patrick Stewart (as poop), Maya Rudolph, Steven Wright, Rob Riggle, Jennifer Coolidge, Jake T. Austin, and Sofia Vergara.
Directed by Tony Leondis and co-written by Eric Siegel and Mike White, The Emoji Movie will hit theatres on July 18.
This official trailer, posted on YouTube by Sony Pictures, comes 5 months after the first teaser for the animated movie accumulated more dislikes than likes following its publication.
