Behind the Scenes of ‘Atomic Blonde’: Or Why Charlize Theron Deserves to Be the Next 007

Charlize Theron gives a new meaning to the expression “fight like a girl” in an impressive behind-the-scenes look at her new upcoming movie, Atomic Blonde.

After her incredible, two-fisted performance as Imperator Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road, the actress demonstrates here that she’s far from done playing strong, forceful female characters and ready to take up any challenges, as physical as they might be!

As seen in the video above, Theron went through serious training sessions to play the tough undercover MI6 agent, Lorraine Broughton in Atomic Blonde. “The thing that I connected with, with Lorraine, was the fact that you feel everything,” says the actress. And felt everything she surely did!

As explained by stunt coordinator, Sam Hargrave, Theron ended up being given much longer action scenes after him and his team discovered her incredible competence for fight scenes: “At first, not knowing her skill level, we were going to break things down, do 3 or 4 moves and cut, move the camera over here. Couple moves. Cut. But then when we saw her ability, that really lit the lightbulb for us of like we’ve got something special here, let’s try to push this.”

“She’s f***ing badass,” exclaims director David Leitch, whose long career as a stuntman made him the perfect candidate to direct the action-packed film, and whose opinion of Theron’s aptitude truly affirms how much sweat and energy she put into portraying her character. “She’s in the top 1 percentile of actors to do their own action.”

Pretty proud of her accomplishment (can we blame her?), Charlize Theron admits that it took a lot of hard work to get every stunt done to such realistic perfection, even though she might have, sometimes, been too hard on her male co-stars. “Guys took so many hits, I had to buy a lot of alcohol to be forgiven,” jokes the actress. “But there were no injuries. There were absolutely nothing. Or so they told me… Maybe they went home and cried.”

Now we know why Daniel Craig recently had a change of heart and accepted to return in the next James Bond movie… Theron was too much of a threat! But we’re sure it’s only a matter of time before she takes over!

Atomic Blonde will follow the story of MI6 agent Broughton, sent to Berlin during the Cold War to take down a ruthless espionage ring. The film also stars James McAvoy, John Goodman, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan, and Sofia Boutella. It hits theatres tomorrow.
