What’s Maniac, Netflix’s New Series Starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill?

A lot of time has passed since Emma Stone and Jonah Hill (looking strikingly sharp, by the way) shared the screen in Superbad.

A decade after the coming-of-age teen comedy impacted pop culture, the 2 actors are united once more, this time for something a little different…

Maniac, a black comedy produced by Netflix, will introduce Stone and Hill in a Black Mirror-like universe (although, there will definitely be some humor) as 2 strangers who start a relationship after becoming aware of a suspicious turn of events during the pharmaceutical trial they’re participating in. Among the scarce details shared so far, we know Jonah Hill will portray a man “who lives a fantasy life in his dreams, but in reality, is locked up at an institution.”

Espen Petrus Andersen Lervaag, star of the original Norwegian Maniac series

The show is based on a Norwegian TV series of the same name started by and featuring actor Espen Petrus Andersen Lervaag (above) in 2014, whose synopsis reads as follow: Maniac is the story of Espen, a man in his thirties who is loved by everyone. Every day is a party and there’s no limit to what he experiences. We meet Espen in various situations where everything is amazing and whatever happens, Espen knows how to handle it. It is simply too good to be true. Espen has escaped into his own head and where his life is a fantastic fantasy world. In real life he is a patient at the psychiatric ward. What would you choose if you were in Espens situation – to be a fantasy hero or an everyday loser?

Made of 10 episodes lasting 30 minutes each, the series will star more familiar names as Justin Theroux, Julia Garner (Ozark), Jemima Kirke (Girls) and Sally Field will also make an appearance (who their characters are is, however, still unclear). Maniac is written by novelist Patrick Somerville and Beasts of No Nation’s director Cary Fukunaga helmed the project. Along with portraying the main roles, Jonah Hill and Emma Stone also officiate as producers.

Although the show is set to come out this year, an exact release date has yet to be announced by the streaming giant. But while we suspect the trailer is not far behind, we have a few photos shared by Netflix today to satisfy our curiosity…
