The Obamas Will Now Produce Content for Netflix

If you were wondering what was next on the power couple’s agenda, you probably did not see that one coming.

Although the deal has been rumored for months, Netflix has now officially announced that Barack and Michelle Obama have signed a multi-year contract with the streaming giant to “produce a diverse mix of content, including the potential for scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries and features,” according to a recent press release.

The former President of the United States and First Lady will produce the content via their new production company, Higher Ground Productions. “One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience,” reads a statement from Barack Obama. “That’s why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix — we hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world.”

With this deal, Netflix is truly getting the best out of its relationship with Obama after the President made an appearance in its original talk show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman.

Ted Santos, CEO of the streaming company, expressed how much he believes in the future of Netflix’s partnership with the Obamas in a statement describing them as “uniquely positioned to discover and highlight stories of people who make a difference in their communities and strive to change the world for the better.”

It remains unclear whether the Obamas will appear in any of the programs, but the deal will definitely bring a wider reach for the Obama Foundation to inspire and empower people via connecting with nearly 125 million subscribers.

“Barack and I have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire us, to make us think differently about the world around us, and to help us open our minds and hearts to others,” said Michelle Obama in a statement. “Netflix’s unparalleled service is a natural fit for the kinds of stories we want to share, and we look forward to starting this exciting new partnership.”
